EVANSVILLE – The Courier & Press sports reporters will offer daily predictions or observations on various high school football topics this week ahead of the 2024 season. Up next:

Which players from Southwest Indiana would be the building blocks of a team we build in 2024?

This isn’t a prediction, more of a fun exercise. There are many more talented players in the area not listed here, but a handful came to mind first.

Courier & Press forecasts: Who are the potential breakout players in the SIAC and PAC?

Kyle Sokeland: My guiding principle is to score points with multi-sport athletes. I will also try to choose differently than my colleague, but I can’t promise anything.

The quarterback would have to be Jett Goldsberry. His ability to both throw and run is a huge plus. It’s cheating, but the junior also plays defensive back, and I might add, for Heritage Hills. For wide receiver, I’m picking Luke Ellspermann at Memorial. Injuries forced him to play multiple positions last year, but he still racked up 1,425 offensive yards. If I had to choose a running back, it would obviously be Jed Galvin or Max McCool.

Defense is a little more difficult. Do you anchor that side at the line or in the middle? Gibson Southern junior Brody Klem has had nothing but success (35 tackles for loss in 2023). He was also one of the better players on the field last August against a strong Boyle County (Ky.) team.

Alex Broshears of Memorial is the other easy choice. But to spread the odds, I’m picking Ty Brown of South Spencer. He can play on either side and was an all-state defensive back with 91 tackles and six picks. Other good choices are Gavin Leach (Castle) or Beau Rose (Gibson Southern).

Treasure Washington: I won’t reconsider my first choice. Goldsberry is fun to watch on both sides of the ball. Not only does he run the football extremely well, but he continues to improve as a passer. Goldsberry is also successful off the field, qualifying for state championships in his other two sports. He is an excellent athlete to build my team around.

Another player I’ll add is Tell City senior Landon Terry. He was one of the best runners in Southern Indiana last fall (1,440 yards, 22 touchdowns, school record 14.12 yards per carry) and a solid defender. Terry also accomplished a lot later in the school year, becoming a state champion in wrestling and a regional champion in track and field.

Broshears is headed to the SIAC and is an absolute force on defense. His speed tackling in the backfield is incredible to watch, but I am even more impressed with his leadership and how he encourages his teammates. It will definitely be a treat to see Broshears, Terry and Goldsberry on the same team together.
