BNP general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said yesterday that his party would send a letter to the United Nations demanding an investigation into the “genocide” committed by the Awami League government and its forces against protesters “before the victory” on August 5.

He said this at a press conference at the BNP chairman’s office in Gulshan.

Fakhrul said the party also plans to send a letter to the caretaker government’s chief adviser on the matter.

“At the same time, we will send a letter to the (transitional) government urging it to take steps to release about 50 of our employees detained in the UAE for supporting the movement,” he said.

Commenting on the resignations of the judges, Fakhrul said: “This is excellent news for democracy…”

Fakhrul also criticized some media outlets for spreading misleading news about the current situation.

“The news has pointed to attacks on minorities and a deterioration in public order, which we believe is completely false. These incidents are neither communal nor religiously motivated, they are political,” he said.

Fakhrul also thanked the transitional government for its efforts to stabilize the country.

“On behalf of the party, we thank Chief Advisor Yunus and the other advisors. There may be some problems after the revolution. Restoring normality will not be an easy task,” Fakhrul said.

“We sincerely thank the transitional government for starting its work with dedication,” he added.
