US Senator Tina Smith looks at the progress of the construction of the new fire station in Dilworth

DILWORTH, Minn. (Valley News Live) – U.S. Senator Tina Smith was in Dilworth Wednesday to see progress on the new fire station.

The cost of the new station is $9.7 million, of which $975,000 will come from congressional appropriations, $4.4 million from bonds, and another $4.4 million from local funds contribute to the total.

The current fire station was built in 1982 when Dilworth had a population of about 2,500. Since then, the town has nearly doubled in size and the fire department has outgrown its current facility. The new station, which will be twice the size of the current one, will provide ample space for training, decontamination and ventilation. There will also be room to expand for more truck stops and personnel, as well as space for firefighters to properly and safely store their equipment.

“You know, being an EMT and a firefighter is a dangerous job. There are things you can do through the design of a building and the structure to minimize that danger,” Smith said.

The Dilworth Fire Department serves the cities of Dilworth and Georgetown. It also serves the communities of Kragnes, Morken, Moorhead and Oakport. It has a mutual aid agreement with eight other fire departments in Clay County, including Moorhead.

Dilworth Fire says the move to the new fire station is planned for this spring.
