Pipit Writing Contest now open to creative teen writers in Malaysia

Pipit Writing Contest now open to creative teen writers in Malaysia

CFor all teenagers ages 15-19! Here’s your chance to enter a writing competition where you can use your imagination to create stories about ordinary people in multi-layered stories.

Organised by author, editor and trainer Brigitte Rozario, the Pipit writing competition aims to encourage older teenagers to write and give enthusiastic writers the opportunity to express their creativity.

The sparrow is found in most parts of the world, except in the driest deserts, in rainforests and in Antarctica. There are more than 40 species. Their plumage is brown and in no way colorful or exotic. They are associated with joy and happiness and represent good luck.

Like the bird, Rozario hopes this writing competition will inspire young people to come up with interesting stories about ordinary people that will resonate with readers.

The mundane, says Rozario, can give rise to the most magical and impressive ideas and stories, making us forget our everyday lives for a moment while the storyteller takes us on a rollercoaster ride. That’s what a great story feels like.

Rozario said that although she has been organizing writing competitions since 2020, this is the first time older children have had the opportunity to participate.

“I launched the Merdeka Writing Contest in 2020 and it was open to children aged 11 to 14. But every time I organised these competitions, parents asked if the older children could participate,” she said.

“That’s why this year I decided to organize something fun for 15- to 19-year-olds as part of the Pipit writing competition.”

“Of course there are non-fiction essay competitions. These competitions are good, but they don’t allow children to develop their creativity and use their imagination. And that’s exactly what Pipit will hopefully offer.”

For those who aren’t sure whether to participate, Rozario says, “You really have nothing to lose.”

“It’s not just about having perfect English… it’s also about being able to tell an interesting story,” Rozario said.

“Sometimes it’s not the person with perfect English who wins, but the person who can tell the better story.”

Rozario also gave some tips for those who want to take part in the competition.

  • Stories must have characters.

  • Share the character’s thoughts and feelings.

  • Give the characters problems to overcome. These problems shouldn’t be easy.

  • Write about something that resonates with people.

The Pipit Writing Competition is open to everyone in Malaysia, including non-Malaysians and refugees.

The top three winners will receive BookXcess vouchers sponsored by Twenty-two13a prize with names engraved on it, a certificate and a regular-sized Tata Pies apple pie.

The details of the competition are as follows:

  • Fiction (2,000–3,000 words)

  • Topic: Living in harmony with animals

  • Registration possible from: 15 July 2024

  • Registration deadline: 31 August 2024
