Deer Valley to build new workforce housing in Park City by 2027

Deer Valley to build new workforce housing in Park City by 2027

At an open house on Tuesday, Deer Valley employees and consulting architects presented initial concepts for a new employee housing complex on a site on Bonanza Drive near the Rail Trail.

Preliminary designs show the potential for a building up to four stories high with a total of 201 to 262 residential units.

The exact unit layout and architectural design have not yet been determined.

The resort is considering two-bedroom and single-bedroom dormitory units. The original plan would combine multiple bedrooms with a larger living and dining area and storage space.

Deer Valley has not yet committed to a planned number of parking spaces, but said it does not intend to give every resident employee a spot. Workers are encouraged to use public transportation, which is easily accessible from Bonanza Drive.

Diane Knispel, who lives near the project site, says that aside from general concerns about parking and noise during construction, she supports new workforce housing in the area.

“I think they need it, and I think it’s a great idea,” Knispel said.

The residential project, called “Ski Rail,” would be located on the edge of Bonanza Park, a neighborhood that is scheduled to be redeveloped in the coming years.

Willa Williford, vice president of workforce housing at Deer Valley, said they hope to complete construction before the 2027 ski season. Williford expects the accommodations to be at full capacity each winter. However, she said the resort may rent additional rooms to outside workers each summer.

Employees are expected to pay no more than 30% of their income for seasonal accommodation.

Deer Valley is required to build 67 employee housing units under a memorandum of understanding signed with Park City last year, in conjunction with the resort’s plans to expand the Snow Park base area to include hotels and commercial space.

Before construction can begin, Deer Valley must obtain building permits from Park City authorities.
