What could be better than live music, glow-in-the-dark decorations and a bike party at night?

After a five-year pandemic-related hiatus, HUB Cycling’s popular and family-friendly Bike the Night event returns to Vancouver on Saturday (September 14)!

Bike the Night is set to become Vancouver’s largest organized night bike ride in 2024. Hundreds of people are expected to participate in the bike ride along the famous Vancouver Seawall and raise funds for HUB Cycling’s advocacy efforts.

When the event took place in 2018 and 2019, it was a hit among Vancouver residents, receiving rave reviews such as:

“It was invigorating to see all the different people cycling together: folding bikes, recumbent trikes, trailers with children and dogs, lights, flags and helmets of all kinds. It proves that anyone can ride a bike. People of all shapes and sizes, from all walks of life,” said one participant.

Another participant boasted, “My wife and I haven’t cycled that much since having kids, mainly because of the lack of cycling infrastructure and the safety of our children. Bike the Night was a great, safe and controlled cycling experience for our family. It was a magical night for us. Thank you.”

This year’s Bike the Night kicks off with a pre-ride festival at David Lam Park with space-making activities from community partners including:

  • Live music,
  • food truck,
  • Games,
  • Bicycle decoration and tuning,
  • an e-cargo bike showcase,
  • Prices and more.

The easy 10-kilometer course goes around the Seawall, around Charleston Park and ends back at David Lam Park. The ride will take place in two waves, starting at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. People of all ages and abilities are expected to sign up for the ride. Participants are encouraged to decorate their bikes with lights on site and show up in costume to be entered into a drawing for additional prizes.

Don’t have a bike but want to attend the event? Mobi by Rogers is offering a free 120-minute ride to event attendees.

To take part in Bike the Night, participants can either buy a ticket or raise funds. But hurry! Early bird tickets are already sold out and organizers expect the event to be a sell-out.

Children under 8 ride free. Tickets include access to the ride and entry into a drawing for a $500 DoorDash gift card and two tickets to Cirque du Soleil, exclusive discounts on Aquabus rides and Organika products, and admission to the pre-ride festival.

Bike the Night is the perfect opportunity to learn how to ride a bike safely at night. Studies have shown that using bike lights during the day and night can reduce the risk of a collision with a motor vehicle by 47 percent. After the 2018 and 2019 events, 70 percent of participants also reported using lights when riding at night, a 9 percent increase from before the ride.
