Shelbyville, IN – The Shelby County Traffic Safety Partnership, comprised of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department and the Shelbyville Police Department, is increasing patrols to prevent violations of school bus stop warning signs. The goal of this initiative is to ensure student safety as the new school year begins.

Major Chris Holder announced Monday that police will be closely monitoring school buses and patrolling school bus zones throughout the county. This measure is part of an ongoing campaign to reduce traffic violations and improve the safety of children on their way to and from school. Violating the stop-arm law, which requires drivers to stop when a school bus is letting students on or off, is a serious offense that can result in fines and driver’s license suspension.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, the increased measures will also result in school buses being followed on their routes to catch lawbreakers in the act. This proactive approach underscores the county’s commitment to student safety, and officers are prepared to issue a ticket to any driver who does not follow the law.

The department urges all motorists to remain vigilant, especially during school hours, to avoid costly fines and, more importantly, to protect the lives of students throughout Shelby County.
