Leaders call on the President to set up a new task force for sporting events

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – With several international sporting events taking place in the United States, including Kansas City, a group of senators have called for the creation of a new White House task force.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) announced on Wednesday, August 14, that he led a group of 19 senators calling on President Joe Biden to create a White House task force to prepare for various international sporting events.

“The United States will host a number of major international sporting events over the next decade, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2028 and 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the 2031 Rugby World Cup,” the senators wrote. “We call on the White House to establish a White House Task Force on Global Sporting Events to oversee the preparation and security of the Games, including through international visa processing, security scenario training, incident response, transportation, diplomatic security, intelligence gathering and dissemination, and securing critical protective assets.”

Because the United States will host a variety of events over the next decade, including Kansas City, the senators believe the task force is necessary to oversee preparation and security for the Games and to work to improve international visa processing, law enforcement coordination and security efforts.

“To ensure the success of these events, preparations must be made to ensure a smooth and safe journey to the United States for our international guests,” the senators continued. “Likewise, the success of these events depends on the ability of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to work together to ensure the security of the Games and, when necessary, respond to critical incidents.”

Senator Moran said he was joined by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Alex Padilla (D-Cali.), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.V.), Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.).
