Gastonia family puts up poster in hope of answers about murder of loved one

GASTONIA – A somber moment Tuesday morning on Franklin Boulevard in Gastonia as workers put up a new billboard in the rain.

Stephan Moore and his family hope that this will provide clues to the unsolved murder of his brother John Luke Moore.

“You know, we’re standing in the rain,” he says, “and that’s a symbol of what our hearts are doing. Our hearts have been crying for the last three years.”

For them, this poster means hope.

“It means that we keep his name alive. It means that we stay strong as a family. We stay united,” says Stephan.

Moore was shot and killed in his Allison Avenue home during a burglary in July 2021.

He was a popular local barber and his family says everyone loved him.

Moore’s aunt, Laurette Avery, tells WCCB’s Emma Mondo it’s frustrating that the man responsible is still at large. She hopes her nephew’s picture, which will hang high above the street for the next three months, will help them find answers.

“I just hope it clicks,” Avery says. “It will do something to make them say ‘oh no,’ now it’s really out in the open for them to speak up.”

The family hopes that anyone who drives by and might know something can come forward.

If you know anything about the murder of John Luke Moore, you are asked to call Gastonia Police.
