FC Barcelona appears to have encountered a significant obstacle in its hunt for winger Kingsley Coman from FC Bayern Munich.
According to recent reports, the French international would prefer a move to Paris Saint-Germain if he were to leave Bayern, a development that comes as a disappointment to Barcelona, who had considered Coman as a possible replacement for Nico Williams after their efforts to sign the Spanish winger were unsuccessful.
Coman, who flourished under Hansi Flick during their time together at Bayern Munich, was seen as an ideal addition to the Blaugrana squad. Flick, who led Bayern to a historic treble in 2020 in which Coman played a central role, has an affinity with the dynamic winger and was looking forward to playing alongside him again in Catalonia.
Coman’s ability to stretch defences, create scoring opportunities and contribute to the team’s pressing game made him a perfect fit for Flick’s tactical concept. Now, however, it seems that Coman is leaning towards a return to PSG, the club where he began his professional career.
As a Parisian native, the lure of returning to his hometown and playing for France’s best club offers a sense of familiarity and security that Barcelona simply cannot match. Furthermore, PSG’s financial strength not only allows the club to meet Bayern Munich’s valuation, but also offers Coman a higher weekly salary – something that Barca cannot realistically compete with despite recent cash injections.
Barcelona recently completed the sale of Julian Araujo to Bournemouth for €10 million, just days after receiving a €40 million cash injection from a group of investors. Nevertheless, Barcelona’s financial situation is difficult. The club is prioritizing sales to balance the books and is reportedly open to offers for key players such as Raphinha and Ilkay Gundogan.
With Coman seemingly out of the question, Barcelona must shift their focus to alternative targets for the left wing position. While Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez have proven their versatility on the flank, Flick prefers a more natural winger who can consistently challenge defenders and create chances in the final third.
Coman would have filled this role seamlessly, but the Blaugrana must now adapt their strategy as the transfer window draws to a close.
