“Time to flip the switch again. Everything towards the World Championship and Lombardia” – Remco Evenepoel refocuses after a short break after the Olympic title

“Time to flip the switch again. Everything towards the World Championship and Lombardia” – Remco Evenepoel refocuses after a short break after the Olympic title

Remco Evenepoel’s star has shone brightly in recent months. After a crash at Basque Country’s Itzulia earlier this year threatened to ruin his 2024 season, the Soudal – Quick-Step leader took the podium at the Tour de France before securing a historic Olympic double in Paris.

After a short holiday, Evenepoel is now back in Belgium, refreshed, focused and ready for the next step. The Belgian has two big goals in his sights before the end of the season. “It all has to sink in first, but I know that it is something special. So I am very satisfied and feel honored,” said the 24-year-old in an interview with Sporza about his Olympic glory. “The Tour and the two competitions at the Games were really my goal. I fought for medals twice, but two gold medals were a real plus. I am very proud.”

Although Evenepoel enjoyed the aforementioned short break after his Olympic double victory and previous Tour de France podium, he insists he will not rest on his laurels. “My rest period is already over. From Sunday to Saturday I did nothing and enjoyed a nice holiday with Oumi. I spent a week lying on the beach chair, which was really necessary,” he explains. “That’s enough to recharge the batteries. From now on it’s time to flip the switch again and focus everything on the World Championship and the last race of the season, Lombardy.”

“I can definitely recharge my batteries for what lies ahead this season. I don’t know how I do it, it’s automatic for me. I can hyperfocus and be very relaxed the next day. Next week that hyperfocus will be back. That’s my mentality, I think,” he concludes, not yet satisfied with what has already been an incredibly successful season for the Belgian. As a bonus, Specialized has given him a new gold bike for the rest of the season. “It’s neat. Apparently there’s real gold leaf in it. They’ve made up for that. We’ll keep it under lock and key for sure.”
