Tourist dies after malfunction during “magic carpet” ride at China’s Detian Waterfall

Detian Waterfall is a major transnational waterfall on the border between China and Vietnam.

Tragedy struck at Detian Waterfall in southern China on Saturday when the popular tourist attraction “Magic Carpet” malfunctioned and one tourist died. 60 tourists were injured in the incident. According to the Straits TimesAt 1:56 p.m., the attraction, a conveyor belt that takes visitors uphill while offering them scenic views, suddenly changed direction, causing passengers to tumble down the hill and crash into each other.

Rescue workers rushed to the scene to treat the injured. Many were taken to nearby hospitals for further medical care. The attraction has since been suspended and the viewing area closed following the incident. Visitors who booked their tickets online will receive a full refund through the original purchase platform.

A witness who was on board the Magic Carpet ride shared her harrowing experience on social media. In an interview with the Global timesShe stated that the conveyor belt was moving upward when the accident occurred and that passengers were sitting only half a meter apart.

She said: “Suddenly it stopped and started to slide. The crowd in front of and behind it collided due to inertia and jammed. The safety walls on both sides were also broken.”

Another witness described how her mobile phone was thrown out of her hand as the train rapidly went backwards downhill, causing her to suffer numerous abrasions on her body.

Following the tragedy, the management of the Detian Waterfall attraction issued a statement expressing its “deepest condolences” to the families of the dead and apologizing to those injured.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of tourist attractions in China and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the disruption.
