IN THE THREE WEEKS SINCE Vice President Kamala Harris emerged as the likely and then presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, a number of Republican politicians and right-wing commentators have – in shorthand terms as a mockery of “diversity, equity and inclusion” – described her as “DEI setting.”

Some have complained that Joe Biden promised to select a woman when selecting his running mate four years ago. Others have claimed that mistakenlythat Biden promised to select a black woman. Regardless, they argue that Harris’ race and gender are the only reasons she got the job.
