Central plans to keep veterans memorial open after announcement it will cease operations

CENTRAL – Central officials are scrambling to keep the lighting at the Central Veteran’s Memorial up after the organization said it was unable to maintain operations.

On Monday, the memorial organization announced that its funds had been exhausted due to increased insurance and monthly electricity bills totaling about $500.

Mayor Evan Wade of Central said the city is working with the nonprofit board that manages the memorial on a cooperative agreement to keep the memorial open.

“The (cooperation agreement) involves a give and take. We will give the foundation the money and in return they will keep the monument open and well maintained. They will respect flag etiquette and keep the power on,” Wade said.

Mayor Wade said the goal of the agreement is to allow the city to provide materials, but donations would be greatly appreciated to improve the maintenance of the monument.

Once the agreement is in force, The city, the memorial council and the school board, which own the property, will ensure that the memorial remains open.

“The agreement on the cooperation project will be presented to the city council. I am confident that the city council will support this as it is a very viable and valuable asset for our community.”

The agreement will be discussed at the Central City Council meeting on August 27 at 6 p.m.
