HAMPTON, Va. — Summer vacation is about to begin again, which means many parents will soon be commuting to school every day. That costs not only gas, but also time. But don’t worry, because a program from Hampton Roads Transit could help parents save time.

The Hampton Roads Transit Freedom Pass gives students ages 13 to 17 unlimited free rides on HRT buses, ferries and light rail in the six cities the company serves.

“This started in 2016 as a way to introduce students to public transport and to get them to school, part-time jobs and the like,” says Thomas Becher, communications manager at HRT.

About 1,400 students registered last fiscal year, and on Tuesday HRT hosted a registration day at Hampton High School so students could register in person and have their photos taken for their transit passes.
