Investigation against Katy Perry over music video for “Lifetimes”

After publication of Katy Perry’s music video “Lifetimes” on August 8, the pop star became the target of investigations into possible environmental damage to the protected dunes of S’Espalmador in Spain.

The Balearic Islands’ environmental agency launched an investigation into Perry’s music video on Tuesday, the agency said in a press release, after her production company failed to obtain the necessary permit to film in the region.

The music video begins with Perry arriving on the islands, where she fist bumps with beachgoers, jumps off cliffs and stomps her feet in the sand before landing in the islands’ crowded nightclubs.

Located in the Ses Salines de Ibiza and Formentera Natural Park, S’Espalmador is home to the “best preserved dune system in the Balearic Islands”, which, according to the Balearic Islands tourism website, is “of great ecological value”.

The agency added that the filming did not constitute a “crime against the environment” because a company only needs to obtain permission from the environmental agency before using photos or videos.

“Lifetimes” is the second single from Perry’s upcoming album 143which is set to be released on September 20. The singer received heavy criticism for the album’s first single, “Woman’s World.” Listeners claimed the song appealed to male perceptions despite its empowering lyrics. She was also criticized for her collaboration with producer Dr. Luke, who is credited in a Lifetime preview.

“Thanks to its brainless lyrics (‘sexy, confident/ so intelligent’), AI-like chorus and Perry’s shockingly insensitive decision to record a ‘feminist’ song with the likes of Dr. Luke, the song sparked near-universal derision and flopped immediately,” The Rolling Stones Brian Hiatt wrote in a comment.

Luke and Martin have worked on Perry’s smash hits such as “I Kissed a Girl” and Teenage dream‘s title song “Last Friday Night” as well as a large part of the prism like “Dark Horse” and “Roar”. Your 143 The collaboration with Dr. Luke comes about a year after Kesha and Dr. Luke settled his defamation lawsuit, years after Kesha filed suit against the producer in 2014, accusing him of sexual, physical and emotional abuse.
