Westmont Elementary could open next week, district says

MARTINEZ, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – As Columbia County students continue their second week of school, construction at Westmont Elementary School is nearing completion.

A letter to parents Tuesday said the district continues to work with the contractor and building officials to complete construction.

The letter states that the contractor advises that all tasks could be completed by Friday so the district can then open to students and staff.

However, the district said it has prepared emergency plans that would require students to report to the Columbia County School District Support Department Complex, 4595 River Watch Parkway, if needed.

The district also says it does not anticipate a need for temporary housing for students beyond Friday, but has made contingency plans to hold classes at the Columbia County Exhibition Center next week if needed.

The letter states that transportation will continue to be provided by school buses and grab-and-go breakfast and lunch until students return to their new school building.

Before- and after-school care is available for students who are already registered.

Independent students remain at their temporary locations in surrounding schools.

“We understand the frustration and uncertainty these delays have caused and apologize for any inconvenience. We continue to work diligently to get our students and staff into the new facility as quickly and safely as possible,” the district said.

The district says more information will be announced on Thursday.
