As students return to school, teachers and professors are learning to navigate the world of artificial intelligence in the classroom.
More and more students are using AI tools like ChatGPT to complete their work, and in some cases cheating and plagiarizing in the process. Over half of the students surveyed by BestColleges said they use AI tools for college courses or exams.
Jose Antonio Bowen, who has held leadership positions at four colleges and universities and co-authored the book “Teaching With AI,” spoke to Scripps News about how teachers should address AI in their classrooms.

Bowen said educators need to change their mindset about the tool. “What teachers call cheating, companies often call progress,” Bowen said, comparing the AI revolution to the advent of the internet.
Bowen said that not including AI in the classroom is a disadvantage for students, who need to learn how to use it in their professional lives. He drew an analogy between AI generators and calculators. While students learn how to do math without a calculator, using the tool later will allow them to focus on other tasks.

The most important thing with AI is to figure out how to use it in a way that keeps people accountable for the outcome, Bowen said.
