Caldwell Night Rodeo: Preview, Format and Watch

Caldwell Night Rodeo: Preview, Format and Watch

The Caldwell Night Rodeo begins August 13th and offers the country’s best rodeo athletes the opportunity to compete for their share of nearly $400,000.

FORMAT

Caldwell offers two different formats for roughstock and time trials. Roughstock features a simple single long lap race with the top 12 moving on to the finals on Saturday. After the finals, an average winner is crowned. All time trials feature two long laps with the 12 fastest on two moving on to the finals where the best on three is crowned champion. Bull riding features the best on one throughout the rodeo with the highest score winning the title. All the action is broadcast on The Cowboy Channel and The Cowboy Channel+ app.

What you should pay attention to

Caldwell is giving athletes the chance to win up to $10,000, and for those on the hook, that could mean the difference between a December in Las Vegas or one on the couch at home.

Tyler Wade and Wesley Thorp are looking to defend their first world title, and in Caldwell they’re also looking to defend a title. A year ago, the two won the rodeo with a combined time of 15.7 seconds, earning them over $6,000 in total. The two will compete in the gap to get closer to first place. Thorp is $19,000 behind Levi Lord, while Wade is $24,000 behind Kaleb Driggers on the head side.

Last year’s barrel racing champion at Caldwell, Brittany Pozzi-Tonozzi, is currently ranked 16th in the WPRA world standings. She won over $10,000 at last year’s rodeo and was the highest earner. If she can repeat that feat, she will find herself in the top 15, which could give her a chance to defend her world title.

It’s a battle at the top between two young stars in bareback riding. Rocker Steiner is $11,000 behind last year’s Rookie of the Year and World Champion Keenan Hayes. Both will compete at Caldwell, with Keenan competing on Thursday night and Rocker on Friday.

Tie-down roping is getting more and more exciting, four athletes compete against each other
for No. 1. The four have 17 NFR appearances and all are 26 or younger. Shad Mayfield is the leader with $206,000, but Ty Harris is just $10,000 behind in second place. Last year’s Caldwell champion Haven Meged is in third place, while the 2023 world champion is in fourth place. Mayfield is currently battling an injury, but all will compete at the Caldwell Rodeo.
