Will Vingegaard’s Tour of Poland be his last race of the season?

Will Vingegaard’s Tour of Poland be his last race of the season?

Two-time Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard could ride his last kilometers of the season at the Tour of Poland, sports director Maarten Wynants told the Danish Ekstra Bladet. Vingegaard will have time to be with his family after the Tour of Poland, as his wife will give birth to their second child. It is unclear whether the Dane has any other plans after the birth of his wife Trine this year.

“After Poland, he is concentrating on his second child. First, we have to see if the birth goes well and then we will plan accordingly,” says Wynants. What these plans will look like is unclear. Vingegaard could highlight two goals in the fall: the World Championship on September 29 and the Tour of Lombardy on October 12. He has never ridden the first, and the second last in 2022.

Wynants is reluctant to say whether the Dane will take part in these races. We haven’t discussed that yet. First he will ride Poland and then he will concentrate on the baby. After that we will see what we can do. I don’t know the exact date of birth, so I can’t say “that he will be ready after that date.”

Vingegaard is already experiencing a turbulent season

So far, 2024 has been a turbulent year for the two-time Tour winner. After a solid start to the season, Vingegaard slipped badly at the Tour of the Basque Country in early April, had to recover for a long time afterwards and even spent 10 days in intensive care. After a disrupted preparation, he was still able to take part in the Tour de France, but with considerable doubts about his level. This was okay: Vingegaard finished second with a lead of 6.17 minutes over winner Tadej Pogacar. After the Tour, the level was significantly lower: the Dane recorded a DNF at the Clásica San Sebastián.
