The NBA Cup consists of two phases: group matches and single-elimination knockout rounds. All 30 teams compete on Cup nights – which are Tuesday and Friday during the tournament – while only eight teams advance to the knockout rounds. Group matches are played in team markets, while the semifinals (Saturday, December 14) and final (Tuesday, December 17) take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The Mavericks finished 2-2 in the group stage of last year’s tournament and failed to qualify for the knockout rounds. The Pelicans emerged as winners of West Group B last season. The Los Angeles Lakers won the tournament’s first championship last season.
