Ange Postecoglou creates “plan” for defenders with “attitude problems”

Tottenham Hotspur have drawn up a plan for the future of Djed Spence, who joined the club two years ago. His time in north London or on loan has not been particularly successful, with reports of “problems with his attitude”.

Should be Pedro Porro’s backup

Alasdair Gold has revealed that Postecoglou has a “plan” for Spence this season. The right-back will play as first backup to Pedro Porro, with Archie Gray also able to step in if needed. The Australian clearly has faith in the 24-year-old and had him play at left-back in the last two pre-season friendlies, both against Bayern Munich.

This news follows various links with other right-backs, including Monaco’s Vanderson and Manchester City’s Issa Kabore (former Luton Town loanee). However, Gold has denied these rumours and confirmed that Tottenham will go into the season with Porro and Spence at right-back.

Is Djed Spence strong enough for Tottenham Hotspur?

Following the departure of Emerson Royal, Tottenham are left with only two natural right-backs. However, Porro is a very talented player and therefore will not need to be replaced due to his quality during the Premier League season. In addition, the Spaniard has not been very injury-prone at Spurs (he was a starting player in the league last season), although he missed numerous appearances for Sporting Lisbon in 2021/22.

Playing in the Europa League this season will do Spence good: he should be successful against weaker European teams. Moreover, these minutes should aid his development and help him regain the confidence and form he had during his time at Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest.

If Porro stays fit, it’s a great idea to let Spence play some minutes in cup competitions, but given Porro’s importance to Postecoglou’s side, an injury would seem to weaken Spurs in this area and potentially jeopardise their season.
