First reactions to Romulus praise the honor of the franchise

Joining a successful franchise after several successful directors can be intimidating and come with a lot of pressure. Fortunately, Alien: Romulus seems worthy of all previous parts of the series.




The first reactions to Fede Álvarez’ Alien: Romulusthe seventh part of the Foreigner Franchise, are there and they are encouraging. The director follows in the footsteps of directors such as Ridley Scott, James Cameron, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and David Fincher, but it looks like he is going his own way. Before the premiere of the film Alien: Romulus was praised for how well it fits into the franchise.

Based on the initial reactions, Alien: Romulus is a successful start. The long-awaited space horror plays out like a “greatest hits” in the series that began with Ridley Scott’s 1979. ForeignerAlthough there are no full reviews yet and there is no rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the first screenings have given critics reason to rave.


Germain Lussier of Gizmodo noted on X that the film “is a crazy rollercoaster ride through the last six Foreigner Filmswith parts from all to ta focused, largely standalone story full of glorious blood and horror. It’s getting better and betterand ends with a phenomenally great third act.”

Variety’s Jazz Tangcay wrote that Alien: Romulus is “easy one of the better films in the series. Fede Álvarez does not disappoint,” before praising the world building and sound, noting that “The special effects are so good that the film gave me nightmares.” Eric Vespe of Fangoria praised the film, writing: “Alien: Romulus is absolutely great and somehow honors every single film that came beforee. Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson are great leads and the alien effects are so satisfying. The finale will be divisive, but I loved it. Big fan of it.



Alien: Romulus takes place between the events of the first film, 1979 Foreigner and its sequel from 1986 Aliens. However, it is a standalone film and not a sequel to any of the films. Alien: RomulusThe cast includes Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu. Álvarez directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Rodo Sayagues. The film was produced by Scott Free Productions and Brandywine Productions, with Ridley Scott serving as producer.

Ridley Scott praises Alien: Romulus

Fede Álvarez admitted that he first proposed the idea to Ridley Scott and constantly asked for feedback during the creation. Alien: Romulus. “Ridley had to sign it“, revealed Álvarez, adding: “He had to agree that the idea was the right oneand the way was the right way. It all starts with Ridley.“Fortunately, it seems that Ridley Scott has agreed.

In addition to the first film, Scott also directed Prometheus and 2017 Alien: Covenantbut did not return to direct Alien: Romulus. However, he praised the Don’t breathe filmmaker, and even noted that he would like to have him for another Foreigner Film.


“The danger for all franchises is that they die unless someone suddenly decides to pick up the mat and run across the field with a ball,” Scott told the Los Angeles Times.Fede is a burst of energy and I had to step back and let him do his thing… Fede had a solid plan in mind and his script was pretty clear. It was also long, but scripts are always long. And so we spent a bit of time on it.”

Scott continued: “I hope Fede has another tip up his sleeve, because I think this will go really well,” Scott added of the film. “He has a brilliant streak.”

Alien: Romulus will be released on August 16th.
