Detroit launches The Connect AV shuttle: A new era of accessible and sustainable public transportation

With this recognition, Detroit is taking a significant step forward with the launch of “The Connect” AV shuttle service, a free, autonomous, and all-electric pilot program scheduled to begin operations at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. This initiative represents a pivotal moment in the city’s transportation landscape and aims to develop an autonomous vehicle transportation service tailored to the diverse needs of Detroit residents.

The City of Detroit launched this project in close collaboration with Bedrock, Michigan Central, and the State of Michigan’s Office of Future Mobility and Electrification. The shuttle will operate on a 10.8-mile route connecting Corktown, Downtown Detroit, and the East Jefferson Riverfront. Shuttles are expected to arrive every 10 to 15 minutes during peak hours, providing reliable and frequent service to the community.

The launch of this service is supported by significant funding. The project was initially supported with $1.5 million from Michigan Central, Bedrock and the State of Michigan’s Office of Future Mobility and Electrification and recently received an additional $1.67 million from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). These funds will enable the launch of a fifth shuttle, reduce wait times and extend the pilot program for an additional year to ensure Detroit residents have continued access to this innovative service.
