Elite tennis on the ATP and WTA Tour returns to the circuit after a series of unmissable competitions at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where world number two Novak Djokovic finally completed the Golden Slam by winning his first gold medal. The Serb is also the defending champion of the last ATP and WTA 1000 event of the year – the Cincinnati Open.

The 2024 Cincinnati Open will be the 123rd edition since its first tournament in 1899 and will be the sixth ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season and the seventh WTA 1000 event after the Canadian Open in Montreal last week. It will also be the 96th edition of the Cincinnati Open to feature a women’s event; Coco Gauff will win in 2023.

The Cincinnati Open is the last of three ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 events to be held in the United States, following the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open earlier this year. Although Carlos Alcaraz comes into this tournament with consecutive victories at the French Open and Wimbledon, his only ATP Masters win of the year came in Indian Wells.

While the five men’s Masters events so far in 2024 have all been won by different players, the WTA 1000 has been dominated so far this year by world number one Iga Swiatek, who has won in Qatar, Indian Wells, Madrid and the Italian Open, as well as winning her third consecutive French Open title. Florida’s Danielle Collins was also successful at the Miami Open.
