Video interview with Siggi Rosen-Rawlings (cameraman of “The Traitors”)

Cameraman of “The Traitors” Siggi Rosen-Rawlings is nominated for an Emmy for the first time for Peacock’s incredibly funny and sly reality show. “It was a huge surprise,” he says beaming. “I couldn’t believe it! I was completely overwhelmed. Since then, there has just been a huge buzz.” He shares the nomination with his colleague Matt Wrightand the duo is one of five nominees for the series this year, including Best Reality Competition Program and Best Reality Host (Alan Cumming).

Rosen-Rawlings spoke with Gold Derby as part of our TV Cameraman panel, “Meet the Emmy Nominees.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

The cinematographer wasn’t surprised when The Traitors became a huge success. “It’s fascinating to see,” he explains. “As a cinematographer, I work on a lot of different shows. I’m interested in all of them, but there’s something special about The Traitors. Each of us is really immersed in the story. We follow the story as if we were watching it at home. I’m really glad that’s being conveyed through the camera. It’s pretty exciting to be a part of it.”

Rosen-Rawlings and Wright submitted the episode “The Funeral” for an Emmy this year. In that episode, players must walk through a funeral procession until they finally learn which of them was murdered in front of everyone. “There was something exciting about that episode,” he explains. “The dark twist. And also the logistics. Everything is filmed in real time. We keep the participants in an immersive bubble so they can’t be stopped or stopped during the march. Everything is choreographed by us and the team to make sure we can cover the aisle in one go. When they get to the cemetery, the tension they feel is as real as it can be.”

To ensure they don’t miss any of the action from the participating reality TV personalities, Rosen-Rawlings and his team operate 12 cameras. In the castle itself, several fixed cameras are stationed in each room to record every conversation. “If there are moments that we can’t get to in time, we have a remote camera that can record that,” he reveals. “There’s a whole team focused on that too. What I tell our camera crew is, ‘We’re part of the game.’ We don’t make contact with them or talk to them, but we’re constantly around them and part of their experience. We’re all tuned into the stories.”
