Brazil’s environmentalists want to end strike that affects oil permits

(Reuters) A union representing Brazil’s environmental workers said in a news release on Monday it had signed an agreement with the government to end a strike over oil and gas licenses in Latin America’s largest economy.

The Ascema union, which represents employees of the federal environmental agencies Ibama and ICMBio and the Ministry of Environment, said it wanted to maintain the general work slowdown that began in January, meaning licenses could still be affected.

Ascema voted to strike in June and is demanding better wages and working conditions.

The agreement signed on Monday does not address most of the demands that go beyond a salary increase, the union said.

Brazil’s Ministry of Public Administration and Innovation, which is responsible for negotiations with civil servants’ unions, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The oil lobby group IBP had previously said that the delay in oil permits had led to a drop in production in Brazil of 200,000 barrels per day. The Brazilian state oil company Petrobras said the lack of licenses had affected its activities in three oil fields.
