5 things you need to know

CENTRAL MICHIGAN (WNEM) – Good morning and happy Tuesday! We hope you had a great start to the week. If you’re awake with us, here are five stories you should know.

1. McLaren Health Care announced that all radiotherapy units at the Karmanos Cancer Institute are operational as the company works to recover from yet another cyberattack. McLaren said patients whose appointments were rescheduled should expect a call to reschedule. McLaren also said that general practice and specialist practices are largely operational and patients can schedule appointments.

2. Bay City Public Safety Director Caleb Powell assures that emergency response times will not be affected by the closure of Fire Station No. 5 on the west side. During a City Commission meeting, he said the standard emergency response time in Bay City is eight minutes or less for 90 percent of calls. Since the closure of Fire Station No. 5, the average response time on the west side has been five minutes and eight seconds.

3. Jocelyn Benson, Michigan’s Secretary of State, said her home was the target of swatting attacks twice in the past 48 hours. Swatting is a crime in which someone makes a false report that triggers an armed emergency response. Benson said she will not be intimidated or deterred from ensuring Michigan holds safe and fair elections.

4. You are invited to share your thoughts on the restoration of the Potter Street Station in Saginaw. The Saginaw Depot Preservation Corp. is accepting comments and will inform the community at a meeting today at 6 p.m. in the REA building next door. The Saginaw bus system hopes to one day make the station its base of operations.

5. Today marks the grand opening of the first of two school-based health centers on the Genesee High School campus. The Mott Children’s Health Center is working to provide health services to young people. People ages three to 21 from Genesee County are welcome. The second school-based health center will open later this year in Mt. Morris.
