The First United Methodist Church emphasizes building relationships in its version of National Night Out

TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) – Some think of National Night Out as an event that promotes cooperation between police and the community, but over the years it has evolved. First United Methodist Church uses it as an opportunity for the community to come together and build connections.

“For us, this event is about connecting with the community,” said Rev. Brad Wheeler. “That’s really what it’s about. Our goal is to be a bridge for everyone to God and to each other in the community. That’s really a statement about who we are as a church.”

Although First United Methodist Church is a religious organization, people from all walks of life and faiths are welcome. The overall goal is to provide a safe place for members of the congregation.

“The gospel is about being there for everyone,” Wheeler explained. “Jesus is there for everyone. No one is ever excluded.”

Attendees enjoyed a complimentary pulled pork meal and took part in various indoor and outdoor activities. The event is an opportunity to see old friends or meet new ones.

“Our entire church community comes together and serves. And then we also just have the opportunity to get to know the people in our community that we don’t see every day,” said Pastor Grace Woods.

Many activities were geared towards children, including Connection Bingo, a cake walk and a bilingual story time.

Church members encourage people to seek fellowship with them beyond this event if they ever need a place to go and feel welcome.

“We are not a country club church where people come in on Sunday morning, sit down and leave,” Woods said. “We want this building to be a gift from God that we use for the whole community.”
