Free agent CB Stephon Gilmore leaves Vikings visit without a deal

Unsigned cornerback Stephon Gilmore visited the Vikings on Monday and left the team without a contract. Head coach Kevin O’Connell said it was a “really positive” visit that allowed Gilmore to get a taste of the Vikings’ culture.

“I had a great visit with him,” O’Connell said. “Similar to some of the visits I’ve had in years past, I would say it was a really good dialogue between Stephon, myself and other coaches where we got to know him personally. Flo (Brian Flores) obviously has a relationship with him from the past and (DBs coach) Daronte (Jones) wanted to spend some time with him as well.”

Gilmore, 33, is a five-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro and 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He played at a high level for the Cowboys last season and is one of the biggest names still available on the free agent market, even though the regular season begins in less than a month. Although no deal was made today, the Vikings have now met with Gilmore, discussed how he might fit into their defense and given him some insight into what they have to offer.

“We’re very proud of the atmosphere, we’re very proud of our dressing room, our players, so I just think it’s positive if we can give the guys a little taste, a little taste of what they might be doing if it all works out,” O’Connell said. “As far as where we’re at right now, there’s nothing new other than it was a really positive visit.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter said earlier Monday that Gilmore’s visit was “not a waste of time,” indicating he had a legitimate interest in joining the Vikings and re-teaming with Flores, who was his defensive coordinator for several years with the Patriots.

The Vikings, who have been severely squeezed at cornerback, could use someone like Gilmore this year. Rookie Khyree Jackson was killed in a tragic car accident in July, Mekhi Blackmon tore his ACL on the first day of training camp, and veteran Shaq Griffin has been out for several weeks with a hamstring injury. The Vikings expect Griffin to be back for the start of the regular season, but at this point, their third starter alongside him and Byron Murphy Jr. would be Fabian Moreau or Akayleb Evans. Gilmore would be a significant addition.

For now, Gilmore will be weighing his options. The Vikings can offer him a substantial position, but he could have other potential suitors – and the financial side of things will be a factor. Gilmore will likely want to sign a contract fairly soon to be ready for his 13th NFL season.
