“Brick Mobile” gives children in Kentucky educational experiences with Lego bricks

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WKYT) – A Georgetown man is combining his love of teaching, art and Lego by starting a business called Brick Mobile.

Duane Keaton brings thousands of Lego bricks to his destinations to encourage the creativity of children of all ages.

“I have a large Lego collection, so we decided to utilize that,” said Keaton, co-founder and lead teacher of the Brick Mobile.

For over 40 years, Keaton has amassed an impressive Lego collection.

“In total, there are probably over 100,000 loose bricks in my basement,” Keaton said.

That doesn’t include the Lego sets. From the Colosseum to the Millennium Falcon to Lego mosaics, Keaton has dedicated countless hours to building and designing since he was young.

“I don’t see Legos as toys,” Keaton said. “To me, it’s more like clay or pencils or paints. I see it as a medium to create things.”

As a former teacher and owner of such an extensive collection, Keaton and his wife developed a business plan and founded the “Brick Mobile”.

“I teach engineering, architecture, science, math and art, all with Lego bricks,” Keaton said.

Keaton says he brings 50,000 Lego bricks with him on every visit.

In a school setting, for example, Keaton makes his lessons unique and tailored to the curriculum by incorporating things like the “Tower Tumblr” and “Newton’s Cart.”

“I teach architecture and engineering concepts, explaining why some towers can be so tall and how we all around the world are able to build skyscrapers thousands of feet tall.”

Keaton says the Brick Learning Center has already created many good experiences and memories.

“They immediately start smiling when they start building,” Keaton said. “It’s so much fun to be able to share it with them.”

Keaton says they can host birthday parties, school and library visits and more.

“We’re also thinking about hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities where I can use the Lego bricks for occupational therapy. Lego is a very universal thing. It obviously applies to all genders, ages, races, creeds, colors, whatever.”
