Young people from Winnebago make four short films about the tribe

WINNEBAGO, Nebraska (KTIV) – Youth from the Winnebago Tribe participated in a summer program to learn about filmmaking. KTIV’s Joe McMahan spoke with the young filmmakers to learn more about their experience.

“I think it’s very important that we share our stories, especially as Native Americans,” said youth filmmaker Tylie Chilson.

Six indigenous youth from the Winnebago community worked over the summer to create four short films on tribal issues.

The six students who participated in this program are from the Winnebago Tribe, so we asked them to focus on their stories, either the culture, the language or the history of the Winnebago Tribe,” said Sandy Macky Scott of Indigucation.

While telling their stories, they also learned the skills needed to make a film.

“We wanted them to focus on three areas. We wanted students to learn about pre-production, the production phase and the post-production phase,” said Sandy Macky Scott.

They also learned what different equipment and footage they would need.

“Partially edit, work with one camera and use a boom mic,” said Ka’mia Blackhawk, youth filmmaker.

“We’ve often looked at Brolls, which is like filming the landscape and showing parts of it as they talk, you know, parts of the country,” said Gia Scott, youth filmmaker.

Although they had a lot of fun making their films, they hope that viewers will take something away from their projects.

“We are really passing on our knowledge to today’s generation because I feel like as time goes on, many of today’s children probably won’t learn much about our culture because our language is dying out and there aren’t many native speakers left in our community,” says Gia Scott.

“They really want to make an effort to learn about our culture, to reach out to people in the community, to hear their stories and to learn about our way of life,” said youth filmmaker Zayne Bassette.

The short films will be shown on August 13th at 5:00 p.m. in the Winnebago Public School theater and are open to the public.
