Overview of the Gregory Center

MILLIGAN, Tenn. (August 29, 2024) – Milligan University will host the second annual Create Conference on Tuesday, September 3, from 3-6:45 p.m. at the Gregory Center.

The Create Conference is a counseling psychology conference with a focus on research, employment, advocacy, training, and education for counselors. The conference includes research presentations, a career fair, and a keynote speaker.

Dr. Aaron Hymes, associate professor of counseling and director of the addiction counseling concentration in Milligan’s counseling program, will deliver the keynote address.

Hymes’ lecture, “Trauma-Informed Supervision: Navigating the Maze of Support,” will take place at 5:15 p.m. in the McGlothlin Street Theater at the Gregory Center.

This lecture focuses on the implementation of trauma-informed care in the supervision of counselors and counseling candidates, especially those who have experienced trauma themselves.

Trauma-informed care involves understanding the unique needs and challenges individuals face, developing the skills needed to recognize signs of trauma, and providing appropriate support.

“Trauma-informed supervision is vital to the courses I teach on diagnosis, addiction training, and clinical placements,” explains Hymes. “When counselors understand the impact of trauma on mental health, they can make more accurate assessments and diagnoses, especially with patients with substance use disorders. Additionally, trauma-informed principles help future counselors recognize the role trauma plays in the development and maintenance of addiction, which is critical for effective treatment.”

Hymes will also speak about the importance of providing trainee counselors with trauma-informed supervision during their internship to ensure counselors are supported in a way that takes into account their own potential trauma history and creates a safer and more effective learning environment.

Hymes is a licensed professional counselor and mental health service provider, a board-certified clinical supervisor, and certified addiction counselor with over a decade of professional experience. He received his doctorate in counselor education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, his master’s degree in counseling and human development from Lindsey Wilson College, and his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Concord University.
