Thousands still without power, more severe storms forecast

Power restoration in the Twin Cities is expected to be completed by Thursday, as thousands of customers are still without electricity.

Xcel Energy estimates that 250,000 homes and businesses were without power due to the storms on Monday and Tuesday. At that time, Excel Energy estimatedd that most of its customers would have power again by Thursday.

On Wednesday, Xcel Energy reported that power had been restored to about 90% of Minnesota customers affected by the outages. As of 7 a.m. Thursday, Xcel reported that 472 outages were still in effect, affecting more than 3,700 customers across the region.

Although steady progress has been made in restoring power, some residents were without electricity for days and had to rely on the help of generators and the willingness of neighbors, friends and family.

And the power outages may not be over yet.

The Minnesota Weather Service is forecasting another series of severe storms for Thursday afternoon, which could lead to further problems in restoring power.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has contacted Xcel Energy to ask when power is expected to be restored and whether Thursday’s weather forecast will hamper their efforts.

We will let you know their response as soon as we receive it.
