You can turn off the Always-On Display on your iPhone. Here’s how

The iPhone’s Always-On Display, introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro and continuing with the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, was a big change for those who were used to seeing a completely black screen when locking their screen. Now, with AOD, you can always see what’s happening on your display, even when it’s “dimmed.”

The iPhone’s Always-On Display is a welcome feature for some, as it provides information at a glance without having to pick up and unlock the phone. You can simply glance at the phone and check the time or important notifications.

However, if you don’t want that and instead just want a completely dark screen when you put your phone down, you can disable a setting to go back to the previous state.

The Always-On Display on iOS temporarily turns off automatically, but it depends…

Despite its name, the AOD does occasionally turn off. Apple has created a list of cases where the display will turn off completely to save battery:

  • Your iPhone is face down
  • Your iPhone is in your pocket
  • Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
  • Your iPhone is connected to your Apple Watch and you walk away
  • Your iPhone is idle for a while (according to Apple, your iPhone learns your patterns and turns off the AOD automatically)
  • Sleep focus is activated
  • Power saving mode is activated
  • You use a continuity camera

How to permanently turn off your iPhone’s Always-On Display

While all of the situations listed above will temporarily turn off the AOD, there is a way to manually and completely turn off the Always-On Display on iPhone if you’re not a fan of it.
