Nigerian lawmakers write to Canadian government demanding prosecution of Amaka Sunnberger for threatening Yorubas and Edo

Two committees of the House of Representatives have petitioned the Canadian government calling for the prosecution of Amaka Sunnberger for making threats against the Yoruba and Edo people in Canada.

The petition, jointly signed by Biodun Omoleye, Chairman of the Nigeria-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Group, and Tochukwu Okere, Chairman of the Committee on Diaspora Affairs, was addressed to James Christoff.

Sunnberger reportedly stated on TikTok that she plans to poison Yoruba and Edo people in Canada.

In the letter dated August 28, 2024, the MPs called on the Canadian government to investigate and prosecute the threats against Sunnberger.

“Ms. Sunnberger was recently recorded making inflammatory statements calling for violence against the Yoruba and Edo ethnic groups in Nigeria. Among other things, she called for the poisoning of food and water supplies in order to carry out mass genocide,” the letter said.

The MPs added: “Your public incitement to hatred against the Yoruba and Edo people is prohibited under Section 319 (1), which criminalises public expression inciting hatred against an identifiable group if such incitement is likely to result in a disturbance of the public peace.”

They also called on the Canadian government to condemn their comments.

“We call on the Canadian government to publicly condemn Ms. Sunnberger’s actions and reaffirm Canada’s commitment to combating hate speech, violence and genocide,” the letter said.
