Partnership to promote innovation and technology entrepreneurship

POLK COUNTY – The future of technology is coming to a classroom near you.

Thanks to a grant of over $250,000 from Meta, Isothermal Community College will open the doors of the new Extended Reality and Artificial Intelligence Lab (XRAIL) this academic year. The lab is designed to change the technology landscape in the ICC service area of Polk and Rutherford counties.

XRAIL will function as a type of technology “makerspace” that will not only enable the delivery of cutting-edge ICC courses as part of curricula and continuing education programs, but will also provide equitable access to the advanced technology resources needed to support the community, including partners for grades K-12, local businesses and industry, and emerging entrepreneurs.

As a result, this initiative will facilitate the training of skilled workers in advanced technologies such as augmented reality, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and coding, potentially bringing new jobs and industries to the region.

“The XRAIL program is a cornerstone of our strategy to not only increase technological literacy in our community, but also usher in a new era of innovation and economic growth,” said Greg Thomas, vice president of academic and student affairs at Isothermal Community College. “With this initiative, we are setting the stage for transformative opportunities that will resonate for generations.”

Since breaking ground on the Forest City Data Center in 2010, Meta has continued to demonstrate its investment in the community. Meta has supported many of the college’s efforts over the years with financial and technical assistance, along with various partnerships with local schools, investments in entrepreneurship and small businesses, and the Meta Data Center Community Action Grants program.

This donation to the Isothermal Community College Foundation totaling over $250,000 will fund the hardware and software needed to get XRAIL up and running.

“Our foundation has a long-standing relationship with Meta and we are thrilled to partner with them on this type of investment in our community that will go a long way in supporting our students,” said Dr. Thad Harrill, Chief Development Officer of Isothermal.

Thomas added that XRAIL will also “foster collaboration across sectors, including industry, economic development, education and government, to promote technology-based entrepreneurship. XRAIL’s comprehensive approach will ensure the region remains adaptable and economically dynamic, and is prepared for future technological changes.”
