How to Register to Vote in Arizona Without Proof of Citizenship

play

It goes without saying that in order to vote in US elections, you must be a US citizen. Nevertheless, the idea of proving citizenship is hotly debated.

Supporters say it is critical to exclude noncitizens from voting in U.S. elections. Opponents say it creates hurdles that disempower voters.

In Arizona, the legislature attempted to reinstate a law that requires residents to show proof of citizenship in order to register to vote. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Republicans’ request on August 22. The request is also supported by the Republican National Committee.

However, the court rejected a request to reinstate the portion of the law that prohibits federal voters from participating in federal elections.

A U.S. Supreme Court ruling requires all voters who register to vote using a state form to provide documents proving their U.S. citizenship. Previously, people who registered without such proof could attest to their citizenship under penalty of perjury and were only allowed to vote in federal elections, such as presidential and congressional races.

There’s still a way to register to vote, even if you don’t have your birth certificate handy. This episode looks at the debate over proof of citizenship and outlines what is now legally allowed.

In this episode of The Gaggle’s monthly series “Election Dissection,” hosts Mary Jo Pitzl and Sasha Hupka explain the law and examine what it means for Arizona voters.
