In-state wing Jaylan Mitchell is a 5-star – The Daily Hoosier

With the transfer portal recently closed and the Class of 2025 still in play, Indiana is just beginning to really focus on the Class of 2026.

The class of 2027 – still only second-graders in high school – still has a long way to go.

But there’s a home-state phenom in the class who’s been on IU’s radar for some time, and he’s developing into a highly sought-after national talent.

On Tuesday, national recruiting portal Rivals released its first rankings for the Class of 2027, ranking Evansville, Indiana wing Jaylan Mitchell as a 5-star player and the No. 4 player overall.

Here’s what Rivals wrote about Mitchell after releasing their rankings:

Mitchell, a 6’10” forward from Evansville, Indiana, has already played two seasons of high-level basketball, playing on Brad Beal Elite’s EYBL 15U team as a rising eighth-grader a year ago and playing with the 16U team this summer. One of the most versatile and physical wing players in the class, Mitchell can overwhelm defenders on the way to the basket because of his well-developed frame and quick first step. He is already an established shooter and has shown signs of advanced passing.

Mitchell attends Reitz High School, the same school that produced Khristian Lander a few years ago, where he averaged 15.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.2 steals per game as a freshman.

Mitchell’s father Jeremiah played college basketball in Vincennes and Oakland.

So far, Mitchell has reported offers from Arizona State, Illinois, Missouri and TCU.

Mitchell is also ranked No. 4 and a 5-star player by ESPN.

Indiana has only made an offer to one player in the 2027 class so far, but it seems only a matter of time before they make an offer to Mitchell.
