Workers in Milwaukee endure heat and humidity: “The weather shouldn’t stop you”

On Tuesday, August 27, Milwaukee was hotter and more humid than ever before. Those who have to work outside find ways to survive.

For Jerry Johnson, work has to get done even on a muggy Tuesday.

“You have to get out there,” Johnson said. “Don’t let the weather stop you.”

Johnson has been doing his job for nine years.

“I’m sweating, and it’s just graffiti removal,” Johnson said. “I’m just doing what I can. Because I mean, in this weather, you can get heat stroke.”

Temperatures reached over 90°F – and the heat index was in the triple digits.

“It feels like 100 degrees. The heat from the stove is blowing in my face,” says Hector Cabrera, who runs a Puerto Rican hot dog stand.

Despite the heat, grocers like Cabrera rose to the challenge.

“We have a lot of water. I drink water all day long and dry off the sweat with my towel,” Cabrera said.

But Cabrera also knows that when traffic is light, you have to take breaks – and wear light clothing, hats and sunglasses.

“Make sure you stay hydrated or you’ll get dizzy,” Johnson said. “I turn on the music, go in the van, relax a little bit, go on Instagram and then come back out and do what I need to do.”

These are some of their tricks to survive hot days like this.

“That’s the way it is. We have to do it because we have bills to pay,” Cabrera said.

When working in hot and humid conditions, experts recommend adjusting working hours, drinking plenty of fluids, cooling down in shady areas and taking it easy.
