Katie Boulter kicks off her US Open campaign this afternoon when she faces Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round at Flushing Meadows in New York. The British No.1 is expected to play at around 4pm BST on Tuesday, before fellow Brit Dan Evans takes on Russia’s Karen Khachanov a little later at 5.15pm.

Boulter has had a good and consistent game so far this year. She has won two WTA Tour titles but has underperformed at the majors. In 2024, she has never been past the second round at a Grand Slam and will be hoping to put in a strong performance this afternoon against a somewhat tricky opponent.

Sasnovich has played his way into the tournament through the qualifying rounds and the 30-year-old, who has won 11 singles and seven doubles titles on the ITF Tour, is in good form. Evans, meanwhile, will play against the dangerous Khachanov on Court 6. He has won just five ATP Tour matches all year but could go into the tournament with plenty of confidence after his good run alongside Andy Murray at the Olympic doubles tournament in Paris.

“Murray will leave a big gap,” says Boulter

As the next generation of British tennis players compete at the US Open without Andy Murray, they are all being asked for their thoughts on what the situation feels like without the veteran.

Katie Boulter stressed that the 37-year-old’s resignation would leave a big gap.

“He’s been so firmly established in the British tennis system for so long, he’s kind of the one who keeps us all going,” she said.

“He’s been there the whole time and I don’t take that for granted. I think everything he’s done for us is incredible. I think it’s taken British tennis to a new level and inspired so many kids.

“There will always be a gap in British tennis and I think there will be a lot of people who will fill it and hopefully I can be one of them.”

Jack Draper wants to follow in the “rancid, stinking footsteps” of retired Andy Murray

Life after Murray really begins on Monday with the start of the US Open, the first Grand Slam since the Scot ended his dazzling career.

“It feels a bit strange not having Andy here, with his rancid, smelly shoes lying next to me in the dressing room,” Draper said before his first-round match against Zhang Zhizhen on Tuesday.

“Andy’s shoes were always drying next to me, with his wedding ring on them and things like that. I miss his presence a lot. I think it’s important, I obviously feel a responsibility to play really good tennis and be the British number one.

“I miss Andy, but of course things like this have to end and I hope that I and the other players can move on from here.

“I’m going to miss those moments when you’re in the dressing room before games and you have someone as great as Andy sitting next to you. It’s crazy to be sitting next to one of your idols from your younger years and yet not having him here anymore is obviously difficult.”

Emma Raducanu says the US Open felt “no different at all” without Andy Murray

Murray ended his dazzling career after the Olympics and the tournament in New York is the first Grand Slam in the post-Murray era.

When asked if anything felt different in New York without Murray, she said: “It doesn’t feel different at all. Tennis is unforgiving in that respect.”

“No matter who you are, it just keeps going. There’s always a new game, there’s always a new tournament.”

“Of course Andy has achieved incredible things and I saw him win this tournament, but things move so quickly here, just like in life. Somehow the next day it’s like old news.

“I think the British are doing really well at the moment. I think overall we all push each other, we are all competitive.

“You see others doing well and you want to do the same. I think especially with the boys, there are a lot more guys qualifying this year, which is really cool.

“Because when I came here three years ago, there were hardly any players. Now I believe that there are many more who have a chance of doing well in the main draw.”

A scalpel, a spray and a skin disease: This is how Jannik Sinner explained the doping case

It’s a case that nobody knew about until Tuesday, and it’s raised all sorts of questions – and in some cases criticism – from other players who wonder if there was a double standard because of Sinner’s success, are confused as to why this was all kept under wraps, and want to know why Sinner was allowed to continue competing before a resolution was made.

Jannik Sinner’s coach says doping case has physical and psychological consequences

Jannik Sinner’s coach defended the world number one and said that the investigation into his failed doping tests had led to his player’s absence from the Olympic Games.

It was revealed that Sinner had failed two doping tests in March, but the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) cleared him of any guilt or negligence.

Sinner was first informed of his doping violation in April. Although he had won tournaments in Halle and Cincinnati, the Italian withdrew from the games in Paris after suffering from tonsillitis. His coach Darren Cahill believes that the investigations slowly wore the 23-year-old down.

Cahill told ESPN: “I guess if you’re not a Jannik fan, you might not see much of a difference in what he’s done over the last few months because he’s still played pretty well.

“But if you are a Jannik fan, you noticed a big change in his body language, his physicality on the pitch and his joy of being on the pitch – he was struggling and I think that was wearing him out physically and mentally.

“He had tonsillitis and missed the Olympics.

“I just want to stress that he is perhaps the most professional young man I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He would never do anything intentionally and he is in an incredibly unfortunate situation.”

How will Boulter and Raducanu perform at the US Open?

Katie Boulter is the British women’s number one and the most consistent player with two WTA Tour titles this year.

However, she has not been able to shine at the Grand Slams and has not made it past the second round in 2024. That is something she wants to change.

Emma Raducanu, on the other hand, made history in New York. Her 2021 title is one of the greatest sporting stories of all time. Her career has stalled since then due to injuries, but she has shown promising results on the British grass court.

However, she has only played one tournament since Wimbledon, so it is not known exactly where she stands in terms of her game.

“Now comes normal life,” says Thiem

“I’ve had enough to struggle with in recent years, especially not being able to get back to my level,” he said. “But since I made the decision in March this year, I’ve been happy about it from that moment on.

“Of course, I was also able to prepare myself for this new chapter that will soon begin.

“I’ve always loved playing on tour and I’ve been very patient while doing it, but honestly I’ve always really enjoyed being at home and living a normal life as much as possible.

“And that’s why I’m really looking forward to normal life now. That’s why I think it’s not that difficult for me and that’s why I’m really happy with my decision.”

Dominic Thiem’s Grand Slam career is over after his defeat in the first round of the US Open against American Ben Shelton.

The 30-year-old will end his career after his home tournament in Vienna in October and was given a red carpet welcome at Flushing Meadows, the venue for his only Grand Slam victory in 2020.

Thiem received a wildcard and the honor of opening the Arthur Ashe tournament on the first day of the tournament, but succumbed to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 defeat to 13th-seeded American Ben Shelton.

The Austrian, who has been plagued by injuries in recent years, said he was “happy” about his retirement and was looking forward to life after tennis.
