In brief

  • Google is working on a redesigned account switcher for its apps.
  • The company has added new lines of code related to the design update to several apps in recent weeks.
  • Strings discovered in the latest Google Keep update suggest that the new account switcher could resemble the web UI.

The account switcher in Google apps could be getting a redesign soon. We’ve spotted new lines of code in several apps over the past few weeks that hint at the UI update, and now we finally have enough evidence to reveal what the new account switcher UI might look like once it’s released.

A APK teardown helps predict features that might be built into a service in the future based on code in progress. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it into a public release.

Based on the code spotted in the latest Google Keep update, we believe the redesigned account switching UI in Google apps could be similar to the web version. Currently, the app version shows your primary account, followed by a “Manage your Google Account” button, other connected accounts, an “Add another account” button, and the option to manage accounts on your device.

As you can see in the screenshot above, the web version looks cleaner, showing your main account’s profile picture, a greeting, and the “Manage Google Account” button at the top, followed by a “See more accounts” collapsible menu that includes other connected accounts, the “Add another account” button, and the option to sign out. The following strings of code spotted in the latest version of Google Keep suggest that Google might take a similar approach for the account switching UI in Google apps.

The strings highlight that the new UI will also include a welcome and a collapsible menu with secondary accounts. Unlike the web version, the account switcher on mobile may also get a new button to switch accounts.

The new account switching UI is still under development, so we weren’t able to manually enable it in the current version of Google Keep. We’ll keep an eye on future updates to the Google app and let you know when the new design rolls out.
