150 students no longer without a bus

Every student in Stoughton who signed up for bus transportation by the school district’s deadline will receive it, including 150 high school students who were not initially listed when bus lists were released a few weeks ago, the district said Monday.

The Stoughton School Committee plans to formally announce at a virtual meeting Tuesday that the district has secured bus transportation for every student who met the June 28 deadline, the district said in an email to families. School will start on Sept. 4.

Budget constraints initially forced the district to remove one bus from service as demand for transportation increased, the Globe reported. Stoughton Public Schools had assigned buses to all 771 students in kindergarten through fifth grade who wanted a ride, but about 16 percent of students who wanted bus service to Stoughton High School or O’Donnell Middle School were initially told they wouldn’t get it.

Authorities have provided an additional bus for secondary school students, which will make two trips each during the morning and afternoon service, the statement said on Monday. Students currently receiving transportation will receive postcards with the notification this week.

For some students who had previously used buses, the route will change to take advantage of the additional bus, the statement said. Students with new routes will receive postcards with updated information this week, and their families will be notified of the change via email.

“We thank families for their patience and understanding during this process and understand the feelings of frustration and concern that arise from not having bus transportation available to them initially,” the statement said.

The committee plans to provide more information at Tuesday’s virtual meeting at 7 p.m., the statement said. Participants can join the meeting at this link and it will be televised on Stoughton Media Access, the statement said.
