Unstable Enumclaw building threatens to collapse, road closures in effect

Enumclaw fire and police crews are currently searching for an unstable building that is in danger of collapsing.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., Enumclaw Police were notified by a city employee of an unstable building on Railroad Street near Griffin Avenue. Officers arrived within minutes and assisted with blocking roads near the building and assessing damage using department drones.

Police said that due to the building’s incline toward the sidewalk, all streets and sidewalks within 23 meters of the building were closed until further notice.

According to EPD, firefighters entered the building and noticed that a support beam had collapsed. The building itself is no longer in operation, but all surrounding businesses have been evacuated, according to EPD.

“We are working closely with our partners at the Enumclaw Fire Department, Washington State Patrol, Department of Transportation and Puget Sound Energy to ensure everyone’s safety as this situation evolves,” the EPD wrote in a press release.

Below are the following reported road closures due to the Enumclaw fire:

  • Railroad Street between Griffin Avenue and Myrtle Street.
  • Griffin Avenue between First Street and Cole Street is closed.

No injuries have been reported so far.

The Enumclaw Fire Department said there is no set time for the currently closed roads to reopen and that people are asked to avoid the area.
