The Grand Arts Council is hosting an event called “Tombstone Tales” that explores the history of the characters who once roamed Grand Lake. This year’s theme is “First Ladies of Grand Lake.”

Tombstone Tales focuses on the history surrounding Grand Lake Cemetery and the ghosts that supposedly still reside there. The event features local history enthusiasts, typically dressed in period clothing, who tell visitors firsthand the stories of the people who helped shape modern-day Middle Park.

Historical ladies include Mary Lyons Cairns, Belle Kauffman, Matilda Humphrey, Carolyn Rhone and Mary Gregg.

The lectures take place in the immediate vicinity of the graves of the historical figures in question.

Ticket holders will meet at the Gateway Inn and be transported to Grand Lake Cemetery. Buses will depart the Gateway Inn parking lot every twenty minutes beginning at 11:00 a.m. and ending on Sunday, September 1, by 1:00 p.m. Tickets will indicate a time slot for participants to arrive at the Inn.

The tours last about 90 minutes.

The Grand Arts Council advises that there are no public parking or toilets at the cemetery. Participants should also expect to walk on uneven ground during the tour and are strongly advised to bring a water bottle.

Tickets can be purchased at RE/MAX Resorts of Grand County or online at GrandArtsCouncil.com.
