13-year-old charged with driving without a license after accident with cyclist in Mitchell County

PELHAM, Ga. (WALB) – Three people, including a man and a 13-year-old, have been charged after the teenager allegedly hit the man with a car.

Samuel Jenkins, 60, was hit by a car driven by the 13-year-old. According to his family, Jenkins is still in the hospital after suffering four broken ribs, a fractured skull and a punctured lung.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Jenkins was riding his bicycle when he failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by the 13-year-old.

According to police, the car belonged to the teenager’s parents and was taken for a joyride. The driver of the car was charged with driving without a license. A passenger in the car, who was also a minor, was also charged.

Police also charged the cyclist with ignoring a stop sign and driving under the influence of alcohol.

“I will be praying for both families because this is a terrible situation,” said Teresa Robinson, a Pelham resident.

Community members believe that such accidents could be avoided if children had more activities in their environment.

“We may need a roller skating rink, an arcade or a bowling alley here in the town of Pelham. We need those things. Those things will keep the kids out of trouble,” Robinson said.

She believes the teenagers made a big mistake and hopes they have learned their lesson.

“There are consequences for your actions. I just hope everyone sticks together because remember, this is a minor and I don’t think her life should be lost in the system,” Robinson said.

This is an active GSP investigation and we will provide updates as they become available.
