Reports: LT Trent Williams won’t report to 49ers without making contractual concessions

According to multiple reports, there are no plans for left tackle Trent Williams to return to the 49ers for the first time since the Super Bowl unless they agree to an adjustment to his contract.

Fourteen days before San Francisco hosts the New York Jets on Monday Night Football to conclude the first week of the regular season, Williams is still waiting for his turn.

The problem is that Williams’ contract no longer includes a guaranteed salary.

He was placed on the 49ers’ Did Not Report list on July 25, but the team must make a decision on its roster before 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, when all 32 NFL teams must reduce their 90-man training camp rosters to 53.

Williams, an 11-time Pro Bowl selection, is eligible to earn $74.76 million over the next three seasons. None of it is guaranteed.

Williams has reached the halfway point of his six-year, $138.06 million contract and is now entering the fourth year of the agreement.

“I knew it could be possible, and I was hoping he would be here,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said of Williams last month. “But I knew it could be possible, and I’m pretty confident that it’s going to work out in the long run and he’s going to be here and we’re going to agree on everything. It’s just one day of practice, and I think Trent will be OK with missing a couple of practices.”

Shanahan said last week he hoped a deal with Williams was getting closer.

Williams has been a first-team All-Pro in each of the past three seasons. The 36-year-old is entering his fifth season with San Francisco, which gave up third- and fifth-round picks to acquire him from Washington.

Williams, who was named to the Pro Bowl seven times in nine seasons with Washington, sat out the entire 2019 season due to disagreements with Washington over how to handle his health and injury issues – including a rare form of cancer – as well as his contract.

Williams has a maximum salary of $31.6 million for 2024. He is scheduled to earn $20.05 million this season and receive an additional $750,000 in game day bonuses.

Under the terms of his existing contract, he is entitled to $22.5 million next season and $32.21 million in 2026.
