While the iPhone 15 Pro added the Action button, the entire iPhone 16 lineup is rumored to be getting a brand new “Capture button” next month. This will give users a new way to quickly take pictures with their iPhone 16 camera, and will offer some additional benefits. Here’s everything we know so far.
The design of the iPhone 16’s record button
The record button will reportedly be available across the iPhone 16 lineup, including the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
According to several different CAD drawings and dummy units, the iPhone 16’s capture button will be located on the right side of the phone, in the same place where the mmWave 5G antenna is currently located in the US.
While there has been speculation that the iPhone 16’s record button might use a capacitive design, the latest reports suggest that this will not be the case. Instead, the record button will have a mechanical design that can be physically pushed in and out.
However, The information has reported that the capture button surface will be touch-sensitive. iPhone 16 users will reportedly be able to swipe left and right on the capture button surface to zoom in and out. The information It also states that users can “focus images by pressing lightly and activate the shutter button by pressing the button harder.”

When rumors first surfaced about a dedicated “record button” for the iPhone 16, I wasn’t sold on the idea. However, the rumors about swipes make it sound infinitely more useful.
In a way, it also reminds me of the days of the iPhone Smart Battery Case, which had a built-in camera record button. Those were good times.
The iPhone 16 series will be announced during Apple’s special event “It’s Glowtime” on September 9th.
