Last week, the Montréal Allouettes unveiled their 1974 throwback uniforms, but unfortunately they didn’t release any stills at the time, and their hype video, while showing some glimpses of the throwback uniforms, didn’t really show them off very well.

In this article, Contributor/Buddy/Canadian University Uni Watcher Wade Heidt added his thoughts and it was noted that Wade might write a follow-up article once the uniforms made their on-field debut. They did that last night, and Wade is here with his report.

Montreal Alouettes. Match report on the 1974 uniforms

On August 22, Phil mentioned that we might get a postgame report from me after we watch the 1974 Montreal Alouettes on the field. Here it is. The verdict is in. C’est magnifique!

The Alouettes hosted the Edmonton Elks on Sunday night. The game celebrates the 50th anniversary of the team.th Anniversary of Montreal’s 1974 Grey Cup victory.

Phil covered the uniforms in detail in the August 22 preview, so we won’t discuss that again, aside from a few aspects that weren’t addressed. This uniform is a modern version of the Alouettes’ 1974 uniform. The front and rear bumpers of the helmets were left blank, giving a nostalgic feel. We noted that the uniform has white socks with stripes. The Alouettes wore similar stripes back in the day, but that was later in the decade than 1974. The 1974 team wore blue socks. Many game photos from Sunday can be seen here in the photo gallery.

I really enjoyed seeing this uniform on the field. I loved seeing the Als at home in navy over white instead of the usual solid navy of the primary uniforms. The white shoulder loops running all the way around underneath look nice and show that it can still be done with modern tailoring. The red sleeves catch the eye. The logo on the sleeves works here because there is no logo on the sides of the helmet. Since the numbers are on the sides of the helmet, there is no need for TV numbers on the jersey. The logo on the front of the helmet didn’t look as bizarre as I thought it would. Here’s some game action. Note that broadcaster TSN used the team’s old “Delta” logo in the scorebug.

I was disappointed with the opponents’ uniform choice. The Edmonton Elks wore their green pants. It would have made more sense if they wore their yellow pants like Edmonton did in the 1974 Grey Cup game. I really wish they would have paid attention to that to give it that retro feel.

Notably, members of the 1974 Montreal Alouettes were at the game, wearing various Alouettes jerseys. Even ones that weren’t exactly the ones the team wore in 1974. They were royal blue, but these jerseys had TV numbers and the logo on the sleeve.

In summary, the Alouettes have a good chance on Sunday. I hope they change their plans and consider wearing it another time. Just like in the 1974 Grey Cup, Montreal beat Edmonton.
