Deion Sanders, Colorado, partners with Elevation Credit Union to open accounts for children of a football team

Earlier last week, Deion Sanders, with a call to action, sought a bank to work with some members of the football team ColoradoThe Buffaloes have now found that company in Elevation Credit Union.

Eight players on Colorado’s roster are fathers, so Elevation Credit Union has partnered with 5430 Alliance to open bank accounts for those players’ children with savings totaling $2,121 per player.

At a recent team meeting, Coach Prime called these players forward and emphasized before making the announcement how important fatherhood is to him and their program.

“I want you to know that you are not in trouble. You have done nothing wrong,” Sanders said. “In fact, you have done something right.”

“A child is not a mistake. A child is an opportunity to mature you, to grow you, to develop you, to give you skills,” Sanders continued. “You all know how I feel about fatherhood. I would not hire a coach who is not a great father. I would not hire a coach who is a no-good, I would not hire a coach who is not doing his job. I would never hire a man who says he will take care of you but doesn’t want to take care of his. That doesn’t make sense to me.”

With that, Sanders shared the news of the deal with the fathers on his team.

“We were blessed. I mean, really blessed. This is unbelievable,” Sanders said.

Through the partnership with Elevation Credit Union, the eight families now have savings accounts at the bank. Those accounts also include $2,121, in honor of Sanders’ own number 21, for the future of those players’ children.

Colorado has combined its two main collectives to form the 5430 Alliance. Earlier this year, they merged the 5430 Foundation and Buffs4Life in an effort led by Blueprint Sports that now benefits all 300-plus student athletes on the Boulder campus.

Sanders accomplished this for some of the affected families in Colorado in less than a week. It’s also incredibly generous considering what it could mean for the future of each of these children.

“We will go beyond that,” Sanders said.
